1800, 27th May 2014, Tuesday:

An age old Udipi restaurant very close to Chembur station. A blend of the old and the new. Nestled around the Ashoka trees and situated in the busy market area. Split into two sections, a sweet mart retail outlet and a restaurant.

We opted for an Idli Wada Sambar (INR 40), a Rava Onion Dosa (INR 70), a fresh lime soda (INR 35), a Mosambi juice (INR 60) and a filter coffee (INR 25).

The Idli wada sambar passed the muster with flying colours. The idli was soft, spongy and freshly made, and the wada was fairly crunchy. The sambar - rich in tamarind and eggplant and tomatoes - had an authentic taste and the coconut chutney had the right tang.

Again one differential point was that the dish was served in a largish bowl with plentiful of sambar, unlike the penny pinching types where you are offered just a small katori of sambar and a much smaller wati of chutney. Full marks.

The Onion Rava Dosa was fair - onion, green chillies, coriander bits, cummin seeds et al.

The drinks, both hot and cold, were good too. The Mosambi was a tad too sweet, and I would do well to remember to ask not to add artificial sweeteners next time. The coffee, on the other hand, was authentic, freshly brewed, South Indian filter coffee.

The verdict: A Thumbs Up. Good food, good prices and excellent location.
